The reference to "Negroe Woman" [sic] is unusual; most directory-makers ignored black people in their work. MacPherson was an exception (possibly due to having been a member of a persecuted people himself) and probably listed most of the black residents by name, though aside from listings like "Negroe Woman" and those who still only had one name ("Cato," a not atypical slave name, appears elsewhere in the directory) it will be difficult to determine the race of any of his listings.
