Word of this street first appears in the 1796 Prospect of Philadelphia; its author, Edmund Hogan, said of it: "Runs East and West from Third to Fourth-street, and between Chesnut and Walnut-streets-- is of an unequal width, from 16 to 20 feet, and 396 feet long."
(1796 Prospect) [no number then affixed to house] Israel Israel, Gentleman, is the only inhabitant in it.
The Prospect goes on to say, "Mr. William M'Dougal keeps his Dancing-school in a large room here, and his dwelling at No. 134 Market-street."
